Streets & Sidewalks

Our mission is to guarantee safe and passable roadways to our residents. All of this is possible through snow removal, pothole patching in the spring and summer, and street cleaning in the spring and fall.

Highway DivisionThe Highway Division is responsible for the care and maintenance of all Village streets and parking lots. This includes (but is not limited to):

  • Pothole sealing and patching
  • Street signs and traffic signs
  • Snowplowing, hauling snow, and salting of roadways
  • Pavement markings, including double yellow lines, lane markers, crosswalks, parking lanes, fire lanes, bicycling lanes, disability spaces, etc.
  • Street sweeping
  • Streetlights, traffic signals, and pedestrian crossing signals
  • Sidewalks in the Business Districts
  • Parking meter maintenance
  • Electric vehicle chargers
  • Traffic islands
  • Litter collections, flower beds, and tree wells in the Business Districts
  • Curb repairs
  • Street trees
  • Fall leaf collection
  • Christmas trees
Of note, the Highway Division recently converted all streetlights in the Village to using LED bulbs, and is in the process of converting all traffic signals.

The Department of Public Works coordinates with the Water Department and Con Edison to consolidate road opening efforts. This results in savings to Village residents in taxes, road closures, and wear-and-tear on vehicles and the roadway.

The Highway Division also performs maintenance on the Village's nine parks (including playground maintenance and grooming of turf fields and baseball fields), logistical support for Village events. In addition, the Highway Division provides assistance to the Water Department on infrastructure maintenance, service and valve repairs, new main installations, upgrading all water meters, structural monitoring and leak detection.

Sidewalk Maintenance
The Village's Highway Division is responsible for the maintenance and repair of sidewalks in the Business Districts.

Private property owners are responsible for the maintenance and repair of all other sidewalks in the Village.

In recognition of the hardship some property owners may have, and the need to quickly remediate hazardous conditions along pedestrian pathways, the Village offers a Sidewalk Assistance Program available to property owners where, depending on certain criteria, the Village will share some of the cost of repair or replacement of a section of sidewalk.
