Tree FAQs

Larchmont has been recognized as a “Tree City USA” by the National Arbor Day Foundation for more than 30 years. The Village Parks and Trees Committee works with the community to improve its parks, plants trees on streets and parks, organizes an annual Arbor Day celebration and other educational activities, and makes decisions about maintaining Larchmont’s tree canopy.

What are the Village’s trees?
A Village tree is public tree that is located within the Village’s boundaries on Village property, including a street or a road right-of-way.

Who should I contact if I would like to have a tree planted on Village property that borders my home?
Please contact the Village Parks and Trees Committee through the Village Clerk.

Who should I contact if I would like to make a donation of a tree or a bench in honor or memory of someone?
Please contact the Village Parks and Trees Committee through the Village Clerk.

Who should I contact if I would like to volunteer as a member of the Village Parks and Trees Committee?
You must be a resident of the Village of Larchmont to be a member of the Committee. Please contact the Village Clerk or the Mayor if you would like to be considered for membership.

How do I maintain a Village street tree that has been planted near my home?
When the Village plants street trees, it places an irrigator (“Gator”) bag around the trunk at the base of the tree. The Gator bag provides water to the roots of the tree. You should fill the bag completely once a week to help establish the tree. Fill the bag through the slot under the flap at the top or, if you have a donut bag, through the cap. Please keep mulch away from the base of the tree, and avoid creating a volcano mound. The Department of Public Works (DPW) will remove the bag in the fall.

What should I do if I suspect that a Village tree is diseased, damaged, or unhealthy?
If a street tree seems to be dead or dying, or if has diseased, damaged or dead limbs that pose a hazard to sidewalks, roadways or privately-owned structures, please contact the Village of Larchmont DPW to ask them to investigate the issue.

Who should I contact about having a tree pruned or removed, if the tree is on Village property?
Please contact the Village of Larchmont Public Works Department to ask them to investigate the issue.
